Hearing aids come in various shapes and sizes. You can obtain almost any level of technology in each of the styles described below:

Open Ear: Open ear hearing aids have become very popular over the last several years. They are very much like the BTE aids described below. They are smaller and have only a small plastic dome or earpiece that fits in the ear, leaving most of the ear canal open. These aids are perfect for people who have mild to moderate high frequency (high tone) hearing loss. Since the ear canal is open, areas where you may have normal hearing are allowed to pass through naturally and the hearing aid provides amplification in the higher frequencies. Your own voice will sound more natural.
Behind-the-Ear: Also known as BTE hearing aids. These aids are not custom fit to the ear, but they are custom programmed for your hearing loss. A plastic earmold which is custom made for your ear attaches to the hearing aid and channels the sound into your ear. The earmold is made by making a silicone impression of your ear and ear canal. It is then sent to a lab which makes a customized earmold. These hearing aids are very sturdy and also have the potential for the most power.
In-the-Ear: Also known as ITE hearing aids. An impression is made of your ear as described above. The impression is sent to the hearing aid manufacturer and the hearing aid is custom made for your ear. ITE aids fill the entire outer bowl of the ear. These are often used for people with moderately severe losses or those who have manual dexterity problems and have difficulty manipulating one of the smaller devices described below.
Half shell: These are a slightly smaller version of ITE aids described above.
In-the-Canal: Also known as ITC aids. This is a smaller version of the ITE aid that fits into the ear canal.
Completely in the Canal: Also known as CIC aids. These are the smallest aids available and fit entirely into the ear canal. Due to their small size and deep fit into the ear canal, they generally have a slightly higher rate of repair. However, they are perfect for people who have cosmetic concerns and also tend to be very convenient for phone use.
